The very best veggie burger. And the very worst!

Want to know which is the very best veggie burger and which is the worst? You’re in luck because Consumer Reports just put twelve veggie burgers to the test.

The most delicious veggie burgers
So which were the best two veggie burgers? And which were the worst? Let’s see, shall we . . .

The second best veggie burger
Weighing in at only $1.08, ConsumerReports.org says the second best veggie burger is Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods California. They say it is “Grainlike. Crisp, flavorful veggies in a soft filling.”

The very best veggie burger
According to ConsumerReports.org, this honor goes to MorningStar Farms Garden which, at $1.07, is actually a penny cheaper than the second-place burger. They say it is “Combo of meatlike and grainlike. Thin, crispy, moist, flavorful.”

The worst veggie burgers of all
Now, ConsumerReports.org ranged these as “good,” so, while these are at the end of the list, it is a list that does not drop below good. Meaning, these aren’t that bad!

Second to last on the list is Franklin Farms Portabella Fresh. It is cheap, at only $1.00, but while it is “Meatlike,” it is also “Crumbly, smoky, a bit spongy.”

And last on the list is Lightlife Meatless Light. At $1.48, it is the most expensive veggie burger, but while it is also “Meatlike,” they say it is “Dry, dense, a bit rubbery, little flavor.”

What do you think?
Now, let’s see if we can get an opinion from people who really know about veggie burgers – us almost vegetarians. What veggie burgers do you like?

I’ve pretty much stopped buying veggie burgers. I get a can of beans and blend them up with breadcrumbs, sometimes an egg, sometimes some marinara sauce and other seasonings. I scoop into a muffin pan and bake until firm and have 12 little veggie burgers, some for the freezer and some for now. Probably come out to about 25c each and a lot tastier!

Oh, I love this burndown of veggie burgers – posts like this always make me happy.

We’re just starting now to get some great reviews on our veggie burgers (probably bbq season in the air) Looks like members on our site like Boca burger the best.

If I have to buy ones in the regular grocery store-I always get the black bean with corn from Boca. I also like what Ruby Tuesday’s uses in theirs but I don’t know the brand. Probably something from Gorden Food Services but they are moist and huge. But my all time fav is the ones Costco has-its like 18-20 to a package and there is no bun big enough for them but they are sooooo good. I am disappointed that Consumer Reports did not review them. I sometimes crips them up and then cut them into sticks-for veggie burger fries. my neice loves them with a little spicy mustard and they are a heck of a lot healthier than fried taters.

    I prefer Quorn myself.

I still prefer the original Gardenburger to anything. I actually prefer my veggie burger to be very un-meat-like.

I like MorningStar Farms original veggie burger and the spicy black bean burger.
It’s been a while, but I’ve had the veggie burger at Red Robin and it was quite tasty.
I’d love to know what kind of beans jennywenny uses for her homemade burgers — they sound great, too.

i prefer making my own like previous post but if a had to choice I would say costco. I tried the others like boca and morningstar but there made by major companies like kelloggs and they dont give you the real lowdown with there ingredients (FDA cant trust u for that). HEHE thats my 2cents.

I’m really liking Morningstar Farms Tomato Basil Pizza Burger. Not vegan, but I’m not either, so… These are great with some pizza or pasta sauce!! YUM!

I must say the best veggie burger I ever had was at Cornell University…Garden Supreme Brand…its not in retail stores, only food service. Alot of vegetables, moist, mild flavor. Look and taste like vegetables. I think they’re vegan. A company in NJ makes them…www.gsfoodgroup.com

Thank you all for your input. I just recently gave meats. I am going into my second month eating only fish. (Okay, I still have an egg or two). But, for the most part I havent cheated and I feel great. I wanted to know about veggie burgers because I miss sloppy joes and I need a sub. I think a diced up black bean veggie burger with the sauce will do the trick. Thank you again..I saved this page in my favs *wink*

Try the brand ‘Fantastic’…they make a boxed mix of vegetarian sloppy joes that are delicious! My brother was convinced they were meat (if that’s what you’re going for). But I am a vegetarian who doesn’t go for the whole fake meat thing and still loved them.

The best Veggie burger I ever had was made by Knox Mountain Foods. They were out of the market for sometime but are back with "The People's Choice Award" winner. Healthyburger. They have a new site, http://www.knoxmountainfoods.com You can buy their dry mix and make them yourself or give them a call to buy the cooked products or find out where they are sold. LOVE THEM

I had almost given up on finding a good veggie burger. Boca used to be very good but something happened and now I find them to be soggy and bland.

Morningstar Farms Grillers are the best I have tasted in a long time.

I do love Quorn products but as far as I know they don’t have a “burger” on the market.

ive only ever tried 2 veggie burgers. morningstar grillers prime and it tasted sooooo good! it tasted meatlike and didnt have chunks. the other i tried yesterday at burger king. it was the worst peice of crap ever. it tasted like someone sqeezed a cheap, chunky egg roll on a peice of bread. i certainly dont reccomend even smelling it. :P

I recently tried Dr Preager’s California Veggie Burger. It’s the best I’ve tasted so far! The outside is crisp and the inside has kind of a creaminess with lots of veggies. It’s wonderful

I spelled Dr Praeger’s name wrong, can you correct it?
