There’s a new drink coming to a Target near you and I don’t know if this is good or not

Vita Coco has an interesting drink which is slated to be sold at 160 Target stores in the Western U.S Later, they plan to increase this number. Which makes this a major distribution deal.

But, despite the fact that it is, apparently, beloved by the Pittsburgh Penguins (according to the news release), I don’t know if this is a good thing or not.

(And, erm, should we really be getting nutrition advice from the Pittsburgh Penguins. No disrespect, but this isn’t really their area of expertise, now, is it?)

The drink is the Vita Coco Coconut Water. The company, which “promises to rehydrate the world one coconut at a time” (would someone please take the pen away from the advertising guy) says that “The beverage has a single ingredient, coconut water, with no preservatives, added sugars, juices, water or coloring.” And that is true. For the plain coconut water version. But this stuff comes in four versions. The other three are coconut water with passion fruit, coconut water with pineapple, and coconut water with peach and mango. And, oh dear, I see something else on the ingredient list. Something more than just coconut water.

Peek-a-boo sugar, I see you
The pineapple version, for example, contains organic evaporated cane juice.

Cane juice. From sugar cane. Where we get sugar.

‘Nuff said.

So is coconut water any good for you?
According to NutritionData, coconut water is “very low in Cholesterol” and is “a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Magnesium, Potassium and Manganese.”

However, they do say that it is “very high in Sodium, and a large portion of the calories in this food come from sugars.”

There are those pesky sugars again.

Bottom line?
Well, there are certainly worse things you can drink. But there are also way better things for you. In fact, for optimum health, NutritionData recommends 34 better choices for optimum health from the nut and seed products section alone, including flaxseeds, chestnuts, and sunflower seeds.

Personally, I prefer a refreshing glass of water (go’wan, put a nice slice of lemon in there to jazz it up, I often do) and a handful of sunflower seeds. If you’re aiming for healthy, it’s the way to go.

I drink Vita Coco everyday, and I can tell you that it replenishes lost electrolytes like no other drink can. Each Vita Coco contains 15 times more electrolytes than artifical sports drinks, which is about 2 bananas worth! I found out that in South America and India, doctors give fresh coconut water to their dehydrated patients as a natural serum! What other drink can do that naturally (not made in a lab)!? And my I add that Vita Coco is delicious too :)

  2. Almost Vegetarian

I seem to remember in “What to Eat” (Marion Nestle, Ph.D.), she said that the body automatically replaces elctrolytes in a matter of minutes. Now she said this in relation to Gatorade, not this stuff, but that doesn’t mean it is not applicable here, too. But I’m sure you right that it is delicious; anything with coconuts is good. But so high in fat, alas.
